How to use Strong’s in OliveTree

These days we have all the tools we need to study like Hebrew and Greek scholars, at our fingertips. There are free Bible apps on the market that include Strong’s Tagged Bible. OliveTree is my favorite app, I use it on my phone, computers, and my tablets.

What is Strong’s used for?

Strong’s Concordance provides definitions of Biblical words found in the original Hebrew and Greek languages. This study resource helps in understanding the origins and root meaning of the ancient language.

Strong’s purpose is not to provide content or commentary. Strong’s is an index of all the words in the Bible. It takes every word of the Bible and defines it, adding a number each time it is found in Hebrew and in Greek. This allows for reviews of every time the Bible uses that word and any similar words. It also indicates when the same word is used differently in a scripture.

How do you use Strong’s?

When OliveTree is first opened the Bible chosen will display. To change the Bible, select the Books icon at the top. The King James version with Strong’s is selected. The scripture I am searching for is Genesis 2:4.

Why would you research a word in Strong’s?

There are many reasons, but the most important reason is to learn more. There are no infallible inerrant translated versions of the Word of God. However, the Word of God as it was written in Aramaic, Hebrew, and Greek is infallible and inerrant. Meaning there are no errors, and the Bible will interpret itself.

Humans, on the other hand, have made many errors, by mistake or by design in their translations. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the King James version is NOT the Holy Grail of Bibles. The men who translated the King James version had an agenda too. I use it because I believe it is the closest to correct but when in doubt, I verify what it is saying with Strong’s and other versions. Looking up the individual words for myself helps me understand why the scripture was translated as it was.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (KJV) 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Genesis 2:4 (KJV) 4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,

When the Bible was translated into different languages, they took out the name of God and substituted it with the words Lord and God.

This is the first time in the Bible that God’s name is mentioned or should be mentioned if the translators had not removed it. To learn the meaning of the word LORD as it is used here select it to open the Strong’s note.

When the word Lord is selected it displays the term yhwh or as some say Yahweh. The definition reads H3O68 Yod He Vav He, (Hebrew reads right to left) or yhwh from 1961 the self-Existent or Eternal name of God:– the Lord. Compare 3050 or 3069.

What does the Hebrew word “haya” mean?

When the link for the tagged 1961 is selected, it shows the Hebrew word haya. This is the same word used in Exodus 3:14 when God says His name is I AM. I AM means to exist, or the self- Existent one. Jewish translation says it means I will be what I will be.

1961

Is it Yehovah or Jehovah?

Back in Genesis 2:4, selecting the number 3050 displays the definition H3050 as yah, which is a shortened version of Yehovah. Note that the “j” is only used in English. Hebrew doesn’t have the letter J. However, as I have stated before I am not one of those who believe God’s name can only be said in Hebrew. His name is Yehovah in Hebrew, and His name is Jehovah in English.

When Nimrod built the Tower of Babel, God came down to see what they had done. God decided to confound their language to make them all speak different languages so they couldn’t plot and plan together. Now a God who is smart enough to create the universe would certainly understand that if He gave all these people different languages then they would have different names for Him. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that God says everyone is to call me “this”. Therefore, I conclude He knows what His name is in every language, and He is fine with us using our own language or His language which I believe is Hebrew.

Where does Yaweh come from?

Back in Genesis 2:4, selecting the number 3069 displays the word for the yahweh’s version of God’s name.

How many times is that used in the Bible?

Notice at the bottom the search for H3O68. Selecting it will open a lookup window to search for every time that form of Lord is used in the Bible.

What about Elohim?

Selecting God in Genesis 2:4 brings up HO43O for Elohim; God in an ordinary sense. Which as you look at it, this could mean any God or goddess of any kind, or an Angel, or ruler, it can mean just about anything.
