I don’t celebrate Halloween because I personally believe it is specifically taught against in the Bible. This is my personal conviction. This is not a teaching of the Apostolic church that I attend. This is taught by my pastor and God gave this to me, as a revelation for me.
I am writing this blog post as an explanation of what God showed me. I am not trying to convince anyone to do as I do or see it as I do. However, if the scriptures convict you then God is dealing with you on the topic, and I would suggest that you listen to God. Not to me, but to what God is showing you from the scriptures.
Why would you question celebrating Halloween?
I tend to question everything. Is what I am doing right? Why is it right? Why is it wrong? Is my good being evil spoken of? Is what I see as good really evil? Personally, I think this is something we should each ask ourselves every day. Just because it has always been done this way doesn’t make it right.
Why shouldn’t the church celebrate Halloween?
Pagan god worshipers celebrated October 31st as far back as the Ancient Celtic or Druids of the people of Ireland, Scotland, and England. Samhain (pronounced sow-win) means “end of summer” in Gaelic. The Druids are commonly known as those who built the stone circles. Most archeologists believe these were used for human sacrifices.
I am an American through and through, so I was raised celebrating every holiday to its fullest. Several years ago, I saw the error in having anything to do with Halloween. In my research, I found that Halloween is a melding together of All Saints’ Day and the Celtic celebration of Samhain.
All Saint’s Day originated with a Pope in the 7th century when he decided to create a festival to celebrate all the saints who didn’t already have their own day. The holiday started out as May 13th but in later years other Popes changed it to November 1st. One of the reasons the dates were changed was to help with the conversions of pagan god worshipers
Samhain is considered a day when the boundary between this world and the underworld was thinned enough for souls to pass back through. These souls were supposed to go home to see family. Families dressed in costumes and went door to door sharing food. This became a celebration of the dead.
The costumes were meant to fool the walking dead into believing you were one of them. If they found, you to be alive they could take you back to the underworld with them. It had always been an ancient custom to invoke the help of the devil on this night. The celebrations are all about fear.
Why did the Catholic Church rename holidays?
The Catholic church was well known for renaming holidays. The pagan god worshipers loved the festivals and celebrations, or reasons for drinking and wild parties. If they wanted to win the pagans over to their way of thinking they had to offer up some party time days too. Therefore, the Catholic church took the pagan holiday and turned them into something “spiritual”, or so they advertised.
Note here this was a change by the Catholic Church. This was not a change designed by God or written anywhere in the Bible. This was not a change approved by the Apostolic fathers, the one God, born-again believers in Jesus’ name. This was a change made by the people who invented the trinity doctrine, who told people to worship Mary, who have hundreds of idols or statues of saints in every church. People who believe a man can forgive their sins and that they can purchase an indulgence to reduce the amount of punishment they will receive in hell. So, we should do as they instruct us?
What does the Bible say about celebrating Halloween?
Are there really scriptures about Halloween? Yes, there are. The Bible is full of references to stay away from evil. Every scripture for the church is based on turning away from sin, Satan, evil practices, idol worship, false gods, and people who practice these things. Because I see Halloween includes all the things God told us to stay away from I don’t have anything to do with it. I don’t dress up as Sarah and go to a trunk or treat party. I don’t buy candy and hand it out. I treat the day as any other.
Why? Society looks at Halloween as good clean fun that gives the evil and devil a day to be celebrated. They see it as harmless to teach kids that being a witch is great fun. The real witches who celebrate this day see it as “our day to give praise to our lord and lady for the bountiful harvest”.
This one scripture is enough for me. There is no doubt that all Halloween stands for it evil. We are told to abstain, which means to hold one’s self off or to refrain from anything that even looks to be evil. Enough said.
1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 (KJV) 21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. 22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.
Ephesians 5:5-12 (KJV) For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. 7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: 9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) 10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. 12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
If the fruit of the Spirit (a capital letter so this is God’s Spirit) is goodness, righteousness, and truth, what kind of fruit are you producing when you associate with witches and devils? God plainly says to have no fellowship with darkness. You can’t walk in the light and play in the dark.
Halloween rejoices in and encourages fear and death. Anything of fear is far from God. Notice the fearful are first in line to be tossed into hell. God considers fear a sin.
Proverbs 8:36 (KJV) 36 But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.
2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV) 7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Revelation 21:8 (KJV) 8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
God doesn’t approve of those who sit on the fence or those who think they can serve Him and play with the devil sometimes.
1 Corinthians 10:17-24 (KJV) 17 For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread. 18 Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? 19 What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? 20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. 21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils. 22 Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?
23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. 24 Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s wealth.
Why chance stacking up deeds on the evil side of the scale? You can’t say there is no harm in it when those around you “mean” it to be glorifying evil. The Bible also says don’t let your good be evil spoken of.
Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 (KJV) 13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. 14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
Romans 3:8 (KJV) 8 And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just.
The word Abhor means to utterly detest. That is pretty close to the word abomination.
Romans 12:9 (KJV) 9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.
Deuteronomy 18:9-14 (KJV) 9 When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. 10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, 11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. 12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. 13 Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God. 14 For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.
Genesis 1:5 (KJV) And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
Revelation 12:7-9 (KJV) 7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, 8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Luke 10:18 (KJV) 18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
I find it interesting that the Celtic day began and ended at sunset. Did you ever wonder who those Druids were?
